Solidarity and stone soup

There is a folk tale in which a traveler promises to make stone soup for his host. He proceeds to request numerous ingredients to add to the stone, only for the host to then naively praise his extraordinary cooking skills. Today the government approaches solidarity with the disabled in much the same way – President of Employers of Poland Andrzej Malinowski writes in “Rzeczpospolita”.

–  Solidarity with the disabled was supposed to be financed from the pockets of the highest earners – in the form of the so-called “solidarity tribute”. The wealthy will not go poor and money for those who need it most will be easily found – claimed the authors of this idea – he explains.

When they occupied the corridors of the Sejm, parents of disabled children demanded higher benefits. In order to ease the tension, the government announced that it would support the disabled with additional money. Although budget is in great condition, the funds will come from the pockets of those who earn the most. This was intended to suggest that the government is as generous for those in need as Robin Hood. However, the new fund for the disabled will be financed from the Labour Fund. The latter is funded by all entrepreneurs, even those who have a tough time making ends meet. These entrepreneurs could well have disabled kids themselves, in which case they will pay to support themselves – he assesses.
